Those who reside in homes in Montgomery County or are thinking of purchasing real estate in this county probably know that the county is always striving to be at the forefront for the green initiative. So it should not be too big of a surprise to find out the Montgomery County has won the Governor’s 2010 Smart, Green and Growing Award for its aggressive choices of transportation. This is due to Montgomery County providing many alternative transportation options including mass transit, carpooling, bicycling, and short term car rentals at the Metro stations. The Governor’s award praises a County for its Commuter Services efforts and local funding for Ride On and ridesharing.
Some interesting facts about the Governor’s Smart, Green and Growing Award is that it is presented to localities that put into use Smart Growth practices. This award began to recognize local governments that illustrate Smart Growth Principles and that lead by example. Some of the reasons why Montgomery County was chosen to win this award are:
- The county created and coordinated a Transportation Management District
- The county gives incentives to employers who help its employees with transportation fees or to employers who have telework programs
- The short term car rentals that can be found at some metro stations; for example they can be found at the Grosvenor Strathmore metro station.
- Effective marketing transit
- And finally guaranteed ride on programs as well as bike to work events.
