Weather you own a home or are living in a home in Montgomery County or Prince Georges County please read on this article has pertinent information about what is going on with mass transit.  The U.S. Department of Transportation gave Maryland $14.8 million to be dedicated to transportation projects; the money came from the Federal Recovery Act Funds.  The $14.8 million dollars that was given to Maryland under the Transportation Investment Generating Economy Recovery (TIGER) is designated for innovative, molti-modal and multi jurisdictional transportation projects.
The $14.8 million that Maryland will be receiving will specifically be going to three specific projects that will benefit both Montgomery County as well as Prince Georges County.  One of the projects that these funds will go to is the Takoma Langley Transit Center, a major transit hub for the Montgomery County Ride On bus system.  Another chance that will be made is going to happen at the bus corridor along University Boulevard and Veirs Mill road. The new Takoma Langley Transit center will be located at the intersection of University Boulevard and New Hampshire Avenue.  This intersection is on the boarder of Montgomery and Prince George’s County.  This new transit center will have 8 bus stops and service 11 different bus routes.  An interesting fact to note about the location that was chosen for this new Transit center is that it is the busiest non-metrorail transit terminal in the area.  The new facility will feature bus bays, pedestrian walkways, a full canopy, restrooms, lighting and real time bus information.
The money that is coming from the TIGER program will also go to funding two other projects.  $1.26 million will be dedicated to University Boulevard in both counties and $265,00 for Veirs Mill Road for the priority bus corridor enhancements.
Funds granted to states and counties from the TIGER programs are part of Presidents Barack Obama’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.  Which was put into effect in order to generate significant economic and environmental benefits and invest in the infrastructure of the U.S., green economy and the public education system.
