Rockville is one of the oldest towns in Maryland, its history dates back all the way to Colonial America. Rockville used to be known as Hungerford's Tavern during the Revolutionary times.  An interesting fact to note, is that in 1774 one of the first calls to freedom from British rule was heard here.

 Some additional facts pertaining to Rockville:

•  In 1776 Montgomery county was formed, and Rockville became  the county seat.
• In 1780 the communities name was changed to Williamsburg, which was the last name before it was changed to, Rockville. 
• The city took the name of Rockville in 1801.  It got its name from the Maryland General Assembly who named it based on its close proximity of Rockville Creek.
•  From 1800 to 1846 the population of the city doubled from roughly 200 to 400 residents.
• In 1873 Rockville incurred one of its largest changes when the B & O railroad first ran through Rockville. 
• Another large change came in 1888 when the 400 residents elected their first Mayor and Council. 
• In the 1900s this city saw its largest increase in population in 1900 there were 1,110 residence. 
  • In the 1940s this population grew to 2,047
  • In the 1950s it shot up to 6,934. 
  • The City went through its biggest increase between 1950 and 1980 where it started at 6,934 and went all the way up to 45,000 by the end of 1980.

In 2004 the Mayor of this town, Larry Giammo, initiated plans to renovate the old Town Center.  This plan called for the building of new stores and housing, in addition it would move the cities public library.  Today the Town Center is home to numerous boutique stores, chain restaurants, and new apartment complexes.  The city which was originally known as agriculturally oriented is now a cosmopolitan city with many different neighborhoods and many things to do.  Currently this town has a population of just over 47,000 people and is the fifth largest city in Maryland.  It is also considered to be an employment hub with roughly 54,500 jobs.
