National Park Service Proposal for Washington DC Real Estate

Visitors, workers, and people who own, or rent  Washington DC homes, or are thinking of moving to the area may get to enjoy a revamped National Mall.  Do to the fact that there have been talks in Washington DC to start on a remolding of our Nation's Capital Mall.  The National Park service would like to redevelop certain parts of The Mall to include a space in front of the Capital which would house restrooms, seating, and a paved area; finally there would be a stand for the media.  This is only one of the many plans that the National Park Service is considering for The Mall.  One of the reasons for all the proposals is due to the debates between government officials, who are trying to preserve this frequently used park, and activists who believe that this redevelopment may end up putting a limit on free speech and civil rights.  These debates have caused Park Services to halt its planning and they are currently seeking a higher level of public input before they decide what to do with the Mall.

The National Park Services believe that the revamping of the mall will offer a better place for protesters to speak their mind.  The current proposal that the Park Services was using  had a plan to help better manage the mall and try to fix some of the spots which have been warn due to age and high levels of use.  Currently, Park Services issues 3,000 permits each year for events to be held on the Mall grounds, which of course has help aid in the wearing of this park. 

Some proposals that have been made for this National Park include:

• Moving the Sylvan Theater, which currently is located roughly 10  feet from the Washington Monument's security perimeter.  This theater has been at its current location since the 1970's.
• Filling the north bay of the title Basin and getting rid of the Kutz Bridge
• Another idea is to pave the gravel walk way around the mall and to put in a playground in a close proximity to carousel. 
• Removing the reflecting pool and paving the area, this will allow for roughly 18 acres of new space to use.  Park Services have estimated that this space will be able to hold around 50,000 people.

The National Park Services have a big project ahead of them with this redevelopment of the Mall.  There are many different aspects that they will need to consider.  They have to not only figure out how to better house everything that this national park offers, but it must be designed in a way that would be appealing to the American public and our Nation's Capital.
