About the History of  The National Civic League
The National Civic Leagues’ vision is to have a country where the citizens engage in self governance and work to help create an active civic culture that would reflect the diversity of the community.  The National Civic League or the NCL is the first advocate for community democracy in America.  This organization is dedicated to strengthening citizen democracy through altering democratic institutions.  They go about accomplishing there goals by not only bringing together all sectors of our society both  public and private but also  by giving technical assistance, training, publishing, research, and the All- America City Award, which is America’s first and most prestigious community recognition program.
An interesting story about the NCL is in its origination.  The NCL was founded in 1984 when over 100 educators, journalist, business leaders, and policy makers met in Philadelphia to talk about the future of American Cities.  This conference had many famous people who have left a mark on this nations history, these people include Theodore Roosevelt, Louis Brandeis, Marshall Field, and Frederick Law Olmsted.  One of the reasons for these men meeting was do to corruption that was spreading in municipal governments.  These men hoped to raise the popular standard of political morality.  At this conference the delegates voted unanimously to form the National Municipal League, which later turned into National Civic League.
