If you currently are living in metro Washington DC homes you know how important the metro system is.  Currently metro officials have come to a conclusion that the metro line needs roughly $ 489 million for vital work to be done to this great source of public transportation.  These improvements are needed in order to improve the safety of the metro line and to fix the deteriorating road and rail networks.  According to John B. Catoe Jr., Metro General Manager, passenger safety is currently not at an immediate risk.  The Washington DC metro line is about 32 years old and is in need of costly fixes.  The only problem is that these fixes are currently exceeding the financial resources of the local governments.  

Breakdown of the improvements that are needed on the Washington DC Metro Line

• $ 88 Million
• Will be dedicated to replacing and /or repairing infrastructure that has been damaged by water.  The materials that have been affected by water damage are track feeder cables and deteriorating concrete platforms located at the Shady Grove, Deanwood and Minnesota Avenue stations.
• The shady grove station is currently doing a temporary fix by using metal jacks to shore up the current concrete.  
• $ 20 Million
• This money will be dedicated to replacing 120,000 fasteners that help keep the track secure.
• $ 1.5 Million
•  in order for the metro to be able to run larger trains that are 8 cars long they need to replace transformers at various substations.  The reason for this is that these larger trains draw 33 to 55% more power than there smaller predecessors.  
• $ 45 Million
• The Metro officials would like to dedicate this money to making the rail cars safety enhancements that were recommended by National Transportation Safety Board.
• $ 5 Million of this money will be dedicated to installing emergency door releases on outer train walls.  This would allow workers to manually open the doors, currently the door releases are only located on the inside of these train doors.  
• $ 7.5 Million to be dedicated to modifying the doors on five out of the six different varieties of railcars.  The modification that is needed, will prevent the doors on the train from automatically opening on the wrong side.
• $ 35 Million
• This money the agency will use to repair the information technology system that was never completed.
• $ 90 Million
• Will be dedicated to revamping the southern and western area bus garages.
• $ 32 Million
• Will be used to replace the corroded ceiling tiles in the underground stations
• $ 16 Million 
• To replace the existing chilling units that is used over the summer.
• $ 10 Million
• To install bumpy tiling along the platforms at 20 different stations to comply with American with Disability Act.
