Those living in Washington DC metro real estate may be eligible for a new grant that will be given to 20 homeowners in order to make there residences eco friendly. The Washington DC homes that are chosen for this program will be funded through the alliance between The District Department of the Environment and CarbonfreeDC to do what they have come to call Extreme Green Neighborhood Makeover. One of the goals of this makeover is to show how a modest investment into the home can convert one’s house into being more energy efficient and at the same time increase its value. Another reason that this program has begun is that CarbonfreeDC, which is a grassroots initiative, has recently won a grant for $20,000 from National Geographic and Sun Chips in the Green Effect Competition. The Washington DC real estate that will be receiving this money must be located in the Shaw or Deanwood neighborhoods. Some of the improvements that these Washington DC homes will receive include Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs, programmable thermostats, weather stripping, low flow showerheads, power down power strips, water heater insulation blankets, and Energy Star rated appliances.
CarbonfreeDC will be doing more than just updating these 20 houses; they will also be offering their own time to complete energy audits to houses, and will be recruiting volunteers from within their organization to help families install equipment. CarbonfreeDC will be offering workshops and will be having them in the District of Columbia’s neighborhoods. People who attend these workshops will learn about things such as energy efficiency, recycling, organic foods, vegetable gardening, composting, no mow yard maintenance and how this helps to not only save money in the long run but it also decreases on carbon admissions.
How DO You Qualify for this Green Development Program?
In order for your house to qualify to be one of the homes chosen for an Extreme Green Neighborhoods Makeover a family must meet the following requirements: live in a single family house that they own, demonstrate financial need, and live in or near the Shaw or Deanwood area.
