Gaithersburg Maryland Homes Going Green

For patrons looking for Green Montgomery County Maryland, real estate, I have great news for you. On October 15, 2007 the City Council and Mayor of Gaithersburg MD approved a law created to ensure that any new or rehabilitation Gaithersburg Maryland real estate projects adhere to strict green standards.  An amendment to Chapter 5 of the City Buildings Code, the law provides mandatory guidelines for energy usage /performance, living environments, and waste management/recycling.  The ultimate goal is to improve construction to reach a level of 20-30% greater efficiency in the city's buildings.

In addition, purchasers of Montgomery County real estate,  in this town are likely to have some of the Green rub off on them.  No, not in price, rather because homeowner education is another of the fundamental parts to the city's plan.  The city's governance believes that in order to maintain the highest possible levels of efficiency, buying  brand new homes in Gaithersburg should include a manual to explain all of a home's Green features, as well as orientation classes to educate residents on the many advantages of maintaining an environmentally friendly workplace or abode.

Background

The United States council in Green building has an existing rating system in place for commercial development.  Dubbed LEED, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system has been utilized by the city's Robertson Park Youth Center, which achieved the government organization's certification in 2006.  The city also plans to see to the certification of all future buildings that fall under its management.

While the LEED has been effective in increasing eco-friendly building in the commercial sector, there are still no formal standards governing Green residential building.  A macro-residential plan is not expected until the International Code Council’s has completed an initial version in one to two years.

As one of only 307 cities in the United States to participate in the signing of the 2006 Mayors' Climate Protection Agreement, this city placed itself at the forefront of eco-friendly communities.  It then of course progressed faster than many of its fellow signers by enacting the afore mentioned mandate to assert its intention to think globally as a local actor to enable to city to quickly perform to the targets set by the Kyoto Protocol.

By thinking globally and going Green, not to mention being designated a "Tree City USA" for the past 18 years, this environmentally friendly city is clearly the place to buy a home if a progressive environmental agenda is important to you.
