The city of Frederick has a very rich history; it was founded in 1745 by Daniel Dulney, and it was originally known as Fredericktown. It is hard to say exactly how Frederick got its name, but some believe that the city was named in honor Frederick Calvert, the sixth and last Lord of Baltimore. There are others who believe that it was named in tribute to Frederick Lewis, Prince of Wales, and the father of King George III.

Other battles that occurred in or near Frederick include the battles of Crampon's, Fox's, and of Turner's Gap. Another very important Civil War location that lies in this county is the home of Barbara Fritchie. According to legend she is the women who waved the American flag in defiance of the well known commander Stonewall Jackson and his troops.
In addition, this county is home to many famous people, like former Supreme Court Chief Justice Roger Taney, and John Hanson, the first President under the Articles of Confederation. The writer of our nations national anthem, and the "Star Spangled Banner", Mr. Francis Scott Key's grave, lies in this city's boundaries. As you can see this city is filled with history, and offers much to do if you just want to visit or if you are looking for a new place to call home.
