Annapolis History

• Acting in the name of Queen Anne, Governor John Seymour   granted Annapolis its charter, on November 22nd, 1708 .  This early charter makes Annapolis the oldest incorporated municipality in the state.  Also very interesting is that charter, issued under the Royal Seal, makes Annapolis quite unique as it is the only city in the state to be categorized as such. 
• Nearly eight decades later, from November 1783 to August of 1784 Annapolis served as the capital of the United States of America.

• In 1786 Annapolis was the home to the Annapolis Convention, a meeting of 12 state delegates that called for the Constitutional Convention to be held in Philadelphia in 1787.

Over 350 years have past since the city's settlement and it has grown into a center of government, culture, commerce, entertainment, and recreation.   Annapolis is the home to two prestigious higher learning academies: Thee United States Naval Academy which  (dating back to 1845), and St. John's, the nation's third oldest college (known as King William's School since 1965).

The State House

One of the most historical landmarks in this city is the State House.  It is the oldest functioning state legislative center in the nation. 

• Construction on the State House began in 1772
• It was completed for first use in 1779
• Peaked by the largest nailed wooden dome in the United States.  It served as a home to the early federal government when it met in the city from November 1783 to August 1784.  
• The Treaty of Paris was ratified within its walls on January 14th 1784. 
• A short time later it witnessed Washington resign his commission. 

History in the Making

Recently Annapolis served as host to the Bush Administration's first Middle East Peace Conference. In November 2007, Middle Eastern leaders met here and committed to a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by forming a Palestinian state in an effort to relieve tensions in their region.  Attendees of the conference included:  American President Bush, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Palestinian President Mahmou Abbas, Leaders from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and others.
