Currently the busiest courthouse in Virginia is going through an expansion. The Fairfax County Courthouse is roughly a year behind schedule and was opened to the public on Monday February 25th. The addition was originally supposed to be completed in the spring of 2007 and now it is predicted to be completed early next year. Along with the increase in time, there was also an increase in the budget for this renovation, which was originally predicted to cost $115.7 million now has a budget of $120 million. This new will be financed by the bond referendum of 1998 and 2002.
With all these new plans for the Fairfax courthouse it is not hard to believe that this project is far from finished. Currently the commonwealth’s attorney, are moving into the new building while they wait for their current offices to go through the renovation process. Judge Smith and Marcus D. Williams of the circuit court will also be moving into the new addition. The largest tenant that will be moving into the new addition of the Fairfax courthouse after all renovations are completed on the old building is the Juvenile and Domestic Resolutions District Court. These new Courtrooms will be completed with the latest technology. There will also be an expansion on the law library that will be open for public use during all the weekdays and also on Monday and Thursday evenings.
What will this new and state of the art courthouse provide?

- three court rooms will remain unfinished for future expansion needs
- Nine of these fourteen courtrooms will be occupied by Juvenile courts
- The remaining two courtrooms will be used by the Circuit Court. Three will be used for General District Court
- Assisted listening devices for the deaf and hearing impaired

- Remote video capabilities for witnesses who cannot make it down to the courthouse.
