Many Montgomery County agencies will soon be calling  Gaithersburg MD home.  During the week of May 13th, the County’s Council unanimously approved a 107 million dollar project to rent and buy Montgomery County MD real estate located at the GE Tech Park.  This Gaithersburg MD real estate, is a five story office building, located between the Kentlands and the Lakelands. It has almost been 18 months since County Executive Isiah Leggett originally proposed the idea.    By the end of the month, several of the county’s department of transportation offices will be calling this Gaithersburg Maryland real estate home; it is predicted that by 2010 the county’s police and fire departments offices will also be located in this building.  

This thirty year old, five story office building that was chosen to become the public safety headquarters has to go through thirty million dollars in renovations. These renovations are scheduled to begin in October.  

Even though this project was proposed over a year ago and the county has approved building on GE Tech Park, there are still some wrinkles that need to be ironed out. Some of these issues are
  • the city would like a long term guarantee from the county that they wont develop any more properties on the GE Tech Park,  
  • The City would also like to be compensated on lost tax revenues.  These issues have not yet been worked out.  
As of now, both sides have agreed to preserve the seven forested acres which backs up to the Lakelands.  They have also agreed on keeping the front lawn on Route 28 open except for during a public safety memorial.

Once the GE Tech plan is completely finalized there are still two more features of Leggetts Smart Growth initiative that need to be addressed.  They are purchasing 130 acre Webb Tract near Montgomery Village, as well as locating a new site for the school bus depot, currently located off of Shady Grove Road.   As a surprise to most people, Leggett has agreed to a 46 million dollar purchase of the Webb Tract, a vacant lot near the County’s airpark.  Many of the people that live near this lot don’t agree with Leggett and many other county leaders plan to use this land to build more houses, a school, and a mass transit stop.  This has caused a whole new conflict, because neighbors think that the benefits that would come from moving these operations to the Webb Tract, would not offset the damages that will be done to their neighborhoods.
