Georgetown Washington DC Real Estate, From Past to Present

History

So you are looking at Washington DC homes in the Georgetown neighborhood.  Perhaps the most famous neighborhood in Washington, DC, Georgetown is know world-wide for elegance, social activity, and its Ivey League School, Georgetown University. Its prominence was first noted by the federal government by its designation as a historic area in 1950.

In the 18th century Georgetown was a tobacco port and commercial center.  The areas namesake was the British ruler George II.  It has been said that in 1790 George Washington called Georgetown the premiere tobacco export in Maryland if not the country.  I know this seems confusing because everyone knows that Georgetown is a part of Washington DC, but this was not the case until 1871 when the city of Washington annexed Georgetown.  Due to Georgetown notability as a port, many successful ship owners that resided here.  This is evident in the neighborhood's original architecture, much of which is still intact.  If you walk down N and Prospect Street you will see some of these magnificent Washington DC homes located above the harbor, and if you continue on to the heights you will also see these beautiful homes with great views of the District, and the Potomac River.  Some of these beautiful houses were turned into museums for the public to view and appreciate. Some of these museums include: Tudor place, Dumbarton Oaks, and Bellevue.

This Neighborhood Today

Whether you reside here, are thinking purchasing a home, or are just coming to here to visit, there is much to do.  This area is known for its many, many retail shops, restaurants, and of course its more than 400 historical buildings.

If shopping is your forte than making a trip to this part of the city is a must.  Stores range from small boutiques, to nationwide chains, and cater to shoppers of all tastes and budgets.  If shopping is not at the top of your list, perhaps the area's dining options will suit your fancy.  With roughly 140 eateries, including such notable restaurants as the eco-friendly Hook (a partly Cousteau owned, seafood establishment) and Filomena (a Clinton favorite for Italian), there are cuisines to suit every taste.
