The City of Falls Church, Virginia's history dates back at the late 1600's, when it was considered a Colonial Settlement that was shared with Native Americans. Falls Church is an independent city which lays only a short distance away from Washington, DC. Over the last century this has hastily aided in its tremendous growth and development.

During the Civil War this city began to see an increase of northerners moving to the area. They were in pursuit of their dream to own land in a more temperate environment. Following the first battle of Manassas, General James Longstead of the Confederate army was stationed here at Home Hill, which is now the Lawton House located on Lawton St. In addition, Falls Church was the first area to ever be bombarded by an aerial attack. This occurred during the Civil War when Thaddeus Lowe took his hot air balloon over this city and began his pummel.
After the Civil War, this historical area went through a reconstructive time and was turned into a rural community. In 1875 the city gained its township. The first Mayer was Dr. John Joseph Moran. Dr. Moran, was the attending physician when Edgar Allan Poe died.
In 1948 this city went through another change, as it gained its independence from county and state local governance. This was done in order for the city to have control of its own school system. In 1962, this city was dubbed an All-American City, winning the Tree City USA award for a whopping 17 consecutive years. This award is granted by the National Arbor Day Foundation to areas in recognition of environmental improvements, and encourages a higher level of tree care throughout the United States.
