Information on Cleveland Park Washington, DC

As our nation's capitol, Washington, DC is clearly a city of distinction.  This is further evidenced in the many historical homes that lay within its boundaries.  Take for example the Cleveland Park Area, located in the Northwest quadrant of Washington DC, and only a short Metro ride from the Nation's famous Mall, and the downtown area.

How did Cleveland Park get its name?  Cleveland Park is named after our 22nd and 24th president Grover Cleveland.  He served as President from 1885-1889 and than again from 1893-1897.  Cleveland Park still keeps much of its original design as a high end streetcar suburb.  The residential real estate in Cleveland Park dates as far back as 1790 when a friend of George Washington built a home here.  This property (Rosedale) is the oldest home in Cleveland Park, it is located at Newark and 36th street.  Rosedale inow serves as the headquarters of the "International Exchange Organization, Youth for Understanding".  Some other mansions that in the boundaries of Cleveland Park are: Twin Oaks built by the founder of the National Geographic Society, currently owned by the Taiwan Government, and Tregaron a 1912 Georgian Revival House which is now home to the Washington International School.

Located just below Cleveland Park, three blocks away from the Metro's red line is the famous Washington National Zoo.  The zoo, famous for its Pandas has been around for over 100 years.  In addition, it is open every day of the year come rain, sleet, or snow.  Everyone knows that a zoo is a very popular destination for a family, but residents of the Nation's Capital use this zoo for many things other than looking and learning about the animals.  Residents who like to get outside and exercise use the outdoor paths of the zoo to walk or run, and on a nice day you may see business men having a cup of coffee, enjoying the outdoors.  The zoo is basically used as another park, a safe haven from the hustle and bustle of city living.

If you are visiting Cleveland Park or the zoo, consider the following dining options for lunch or dinner:

  • Vace
    • Pizza slices
  • Cold Stone Creamery
    • Ice cream Sundaes
  • Palena Cafe
    • Home made hotdogs, burgers, roasts, and pastas
  • Wine bar at Dino

  • Ardeo
    • American
  • Bardeo

Whether you are visiting the District or thinking of relocating here it is clear that that there is plenty to do in this Northwest neighborhood.
