History
The town of Chevy Chase Maryland was established in the late 19th century; prior to this it was considered unincorporated farmland. Senator Francis G. Newland of Nevada and his business partner began to aggressively acquire land in Northwest Washington, DC and in southern areas of Montgomery County, Maryland. They planned to develop a residential streetcar suburb for the District of Columbia. In 1890 the Chevy Chase Land Company was formed, owning roughly 1,700 acres of land that extended along present day Connecticut Avenue. More specifically, the company’s acreage stretched from Florida Avenue in the District, north to Jones Bridge Road inside I-495. Developers carefully planned this town in order to preserve its natural beauty in the fashion they believed fit. In order to preserve this vision, they set landscaping and architectural standards that far surpass the standard of the time. This accomplishment is evident in the pleasant environment this town provides today.
Present Day
Currently the town is governed by a five member elected town-council. This includes the town’s mayor. In addition, the town boasts many committees that are comprised largely of volunteers. One such group is the Tree Committee, whose charge is to help Chevy Chase keep the natural beauty it has become known for. Another is the Traffic Committee, which helps advising on all the traffic issues from speeding to sign violations.
